I came to this profession late in life, but I am grateful for the opportunity to use my education and training, as well as my life experience to support others who might be struggling with some of the challenges life can present. I am an intern therapist working under the supervision of Jonathan Statt, LMFT, who is supporting my training and education. I am working on completing my MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at The Chicago School.
I have experience working with people in recovery, as well as at-risk youth, and hope to dedicate my practice to both populations. As an older man, I am also keenly aware of the specific challenges we face as aging adults, particularly those in the midst of retirement.
I believe that as mental health professionals it is our responsibility not only to provide guidance and support for our clients, but also to ensure they clearly understand this process. My previous experiences with therapy, and the experiences of my friends and family who have tried therapy, convinced me it is vital to make sure our clients understand how this process works – what are our responsibilities as therapists and what are your goals as a client?
I am a third generation Arizonan, and proud of my Mexican heritage. I was a journalist in another life and had a chance to travel the world but very happy to be back. I love early morning hikes in the desert, cooking for my friends and family and waiting for cooler weather so I can play tennis again.
I am available for appointments on Wednesdays & Sundays. I can be reached at vabalos@affinitycounseling.org or 520-257-1168 x707.
Accepts: No insurance plans. Charges discounted fee of $50 per session.

Hello! I am currently an Intern Counselor with Affinity Counseling Center as I pursue my masters degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling through Grand Canyon University, and I am working under the supervision of Daniel Orozco, LPC. I am looking forward to providing a safe, trusting, and productive therapeutic environment, as I continue my training and education. It is my belief that everyone is entitled to mental health counseling from well trained and knowledgeable counselors and therapists.
My past experiences include working in child welfare and with various community partners to provide support to those in need. Currently, I am a school counselor at a local elementary school where I provide school counseling services to students, such as mediation, crisis counseling, skills training.
These experiences have allowed me to see how much change can be made from providing the appropriate mental health counseling for all of those in need. We all face challenges in life, and having someone on your side to help you navigate your challenges can make all the difference.
During this time of internship, I strive to become one of those counselors that supports and guides their clients through research based and data-driven practices, while providing the care and attention that each human deserves.
When I’m not with Affinity Counseling Center, I can be found spending time with my family. We love to watch movies, work on arts and crafts, and spend quality time together. I love to travel and stay busy, just as much as I love to stay in and relax.
I am available for appointments on Tuesdays & Sundays. I can be reached at mjames@affinitycounseling.org or 520-257-1168 x704.

Mindfulness is an act of hospitality; a way of learning to treat ourselves with kindness and care that gradually fosters the restoration of our well-being. Healing is the process of remembering the goodness within ourselves, connecting intimately to our inner world, and finding a new balance that restores our sense of integrity. Our time together will be focused on cultivating a more consistently positive self-image that is rooted in a strong sense of self-compassion and supported by secure relationships.

Hi there! I am currently an intern therapist at Affinity Counseling Center as part of my master's degree program in Clinical Mental Health at Grand Canyon University.
It is my belief that each person has something to bring to the table and the ability to overcome everything life throws them. Sometimes, to face these struggles, we need someone to stand beside us and give us more strength and guidance to do so. No matter the situation, I strive to build a firm foundation and trusting relationship with my clients to ensure the most effective care.
During my time at Grand Canyon University, I have gained knowledge in providing individual therapy, couples and marriage counseling, group therapy, and family therapy. Among these, I take special interest in anxiety, depression, parenting challenges, life changes, and relationship conflict.
As an intern, I work under the supervision of Jonathan Statt, LMFT to ensure effective and quality are for my clients. Under his supervision, I will continue to gain insight into the counseling field and learn more about treatment, techniques, and the necessary skills to develop my therapeutic style and ability.
In my free time, I can be found with my family, watching basketball, or reading a good book. Everyone has a story and with each story comes conflict. It is my life’s goal to be the character in your story to ensure you overcome and reach that happy ending. I provide a safe, nonjudgmental zone for each client to be themselves and work through their situations.
I am available for appointments on Saturdays & Sundays. I can be reached at kyarbrough@affinitycounseling.org or 520-257-1168 x715.
