Counselors

Jonathan Statt, MC, LMFT - Co-founder & Independent Therapist

For over 14 years, I have successfully worked with people to  gain insight and create positive patterns of behavior to repair broken  relationships, heal from past abuse/trauma, improve self-control, break free from anxiety and depression, and achieve greater life  satisfaction.  I strive to create a safe, comfortable, non-judgmental  environment for clients to feel understood and accepted. I often use  stories from my life experiences as a youth pastor, Jr. High teacher,  and married father of three to relate to clients and teach lessons that I am still learning. The most common positive comment I receive  from clients is that they always leave having learned something new.

I have a passion for working with teens, adults, and couples on a variety of issues including anxiety, depression, impulse control, life transitions, personal growth, relationship conflict and communication, men's health, sexuality, grief, overcoming trauma/abuse,  and spiritual conflicts.

When not working in the community or counseling, I love  spending time with my wife, two daughters, and son. I am available on  M-Th and Saturdays for appointments and can be contacted at jstatt@affinitycounseling.org or (520) 257-1168 x1.

I primarily use Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Solution-Focused Therapy. Skylar Cook, MA, LAC - Associate Therapist

The fact that you are reading this says a great deal about you. Despite the circumstances you are facing and the pain you are trying to deal with there is something inside of you that’s helping you to keep going, and to try to find a way through the mess and the pain. My hope is to join you in your journey through this mess and pain. I am not the expert on your life, you are. However, I will work to meet you where you are at, hear your story, and together we can go from there.
I am influenced by certain ideas and theories (EFT, REBT, MI), but I am not going to try and make your story fit into a certain mold. We are going to work together to make sure what happens in our sessions reflects your needs and your goals. I specialize in working with teens struggling with a range of issues as well as couples (both married and pre-marital). I also have experience working with individuals struggling with anxiety and depression.
I am passionate about therapy because at its core it is a relational process. Therapy isn’t just about someone giving you advice or pointing out chinks in your emotional armor. It’s about connecting with someone, being seen and heard, and in that process discovering something about yourself which helps you move forward. You can expect me to be genuine, empathetic, and nonjudgmental. This means I am going to truly be me, I’m going to plant myself in your world, and I’m going to accept you as you are. You can also expect me to do my very best to be up to date on tools and techniques which give us the best chance to accomplish your goals. Finally, you can expect me to pray for you both in and out of session. While I commit every day to doing my best for my clients I recognize where true healing comes from.
My personal life is filled with my wife and our 3 wonderful little girls. Together, we like to travel, hike, camp, play outdoors, and dance around to Disney music (a natural consequence of living with all girls). When I’m not with my family I’m reading, listening to podcasts (my tastes range from sports to slice of life) and exploring the outdoors. I’m a HUGE fan of anything involving chocolate and peanut butter, and avoid country music like the plague. I am practicing under the supervision of Jonathan Statt, LMFT and do not accept insurance.  I charge $90 per session and am available on Fridays for appointments.  You can contact me at scook@affinitycounseling.org or 257-1168 x5.

Accepts: No insurance plans. Charges discounted fee of $90 per session.

Works with: Adolescents (12+), Couples, Individuals, Families

Garret Bolthouse, MA, MCFC, LAC-T - Associate Therapist

Everyone has their own unique story to tell and needs someone they feel is safe, confidential, and ready to listen. I am passionate about people and the stories they are willing to share -- their hurts and their joys, their losses and their successes. Absolutely everyone, at some point in their life, experiences a sense of feeling stuck or feeling unable to move forward, and that’s OK! The fact that you are seeking counseling tells me that you have incredible courage, and are ready to push forward, but may not know where to begin. I will work to walk with you, listen to your story, help you uncover your strengths, collaborate with you to develop goals, and explore solutions that may help you to thrive again.

People describe me as highly relational, kind, warm, funny, grounded, and smart. For thirteen years, I worked as a lay-minister alongside teenagers, college students, couples, and their families, and have also worked professionally with mental and behavioral health programs for young people across the country. I have a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy with a minor in Business Administration from the University of Arizona, and a Master’s degree in Marriage, Couple & Family Counseling from Regent University. My work as a counselor is primarily influenced by Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness, Strengths-Based Counseling and Positive Psychology. I am currently practicing as a Licensed Associate Counselor under the supervision of Daniel Orozco, LPC.

In my free time, I spend time with my wife of sixteen years and our one-year old foster child. I love reading, playing guitar, bass and piano, hiking, backpacking, biking, games with friends, and spending time with people I love. And I am looking forward to meeting you! I do not accept insurance, but charge a reduced rate of $90 per session.  I have availability for appointments on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. You can contact me at gbolthouse@affinitycounseling.org or (520) 257-1168 x705.

Heidi Cowell, MA, LAC, NCC - Associate Therapist

Life can be hard and that is part of the reality that comes with being human. Oftentimes our stories do not get listened to or honored and this can create a deep sense of aloneness. Therapy is a relationship where we collaborate to listen to you, the client. Whether you are dealing with the difficulties of family or other relationships, the demands of work and school, or struggling with self-care, counseling can be a powerful way to get back on your feet.

My therapeutic approach is relational and attachment based. This means that I focus on how your inner world has been shaped by early experiences, as well as how that impacts your present relationships and broader life experience.

I have experience working with individuals who struggle from depression, anxiety, stress, fear/isolation, lack of motivation, grief, trauma, anger, and other issues that interfere with everyday life.

This is a safe place to share your story. Along the way you can expect me to be empathic, relational, and authentic because I believe that who you are matters, and who you are becoming matters.

I am practicing under the supervision of Daniel Orozco, LPC and am available for video sessions on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. I have in-office hours on Wednesdays.  Appointments can be scheduled directly on our website. If you have any questions, I can be reached at hcowell@affinitycounseling.org, or by calling (520) 257-1168, extension 712.

Accepts: No insurance plans. Charges discounted fee of $90 per session.

I am currently a graduate student with Grand Canyon University working towards my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and am practicing under the supervision of Jonathan Statt, LMFT (AZ).
When I am not counseling, I am probably spending time with my husband of three years and enjoying our two wonderful dogs Mosby and Chops. Michael Menchaca, Intern Therapist

Have you ever felt like it was too hard to go on? Has that most important relationship in your life morphed into the most difficult avenue to navigate? Relationships have the opportunity to bring us the most joy and growth in our lives due to intimacy and vulnerability; however, it is not without its trials. Many times, we seek out advice from those around us because of that familiarity, but that does not mean that it is sound or evidenced based solutions. In the same way that you would want someone trained and experienced to care for your physical health, shouldn’t your mental health be as important? It would be an honor to venture beside you in working through the difficulties you may be facing individually, as a couple, or with children.
My goal in therapy is to first work on establishing a safe environment where you feel comfortable with discussing those vulnerable areas of your life. It is not easy to open up to a stranger, but I worked hard to keep my approach person-centered. I have worked in behavioral health for 7.5 years as a counselor, case manager, working with adults and kids, people who are SMI determined, addiction services at a Medication Assisted Treatment facility, people with open legal cases or DCS involvement, and people with affiliation with various tribes. No two people are alike so I would never force a specific approach or therapy model if it was not best practice. In doing so, I have had the opportunity to expand my knowledge in learning the following models: Cognitive Based Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Based Therapy (DBT), Narrative Therapy, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing. My plan is to continue to learn more models and approaches to better support you with whatever struggles you may be facing.
I am married with three wonderful little kids, one girl and two boys. I enjoy sports, having both played and coached. The Olympics are always something my family and I try to watch. It is fascinating to see the dedication and sacrifice these athletes make to compete at the highest level. Star Wars is always better than Star Trek. I also enjoy fantasy based movies and games along with Greek and Roman mythology. I enjoy spending time with my family going outside for walks, exploring nature, and finding the best parks in Tucson when the sun isn’t trying to melt us.
I look forward to meeting with you! I am available for appointments Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 2pm-5pm (virtual only) and Sunday in person from 8am-1pm. I am practicing under the supervision of Jonathan Statt LMFT, and I do not accept insurance. I charge $50 per session. You can contact me at mmenchaca@affinitycounseling.org or (520) 257-1168 x 707.

Accepts: No insurance plans. Charges discounted fee of $50 per session.

Jonathan Kampa, Intern Therapist

Do you ever feel as though you are trapped by feelings of anxiety, loneliness, or helplessness? When people experience trauma or severe life stressors, it is not uncommon for us to feel as though our lives are unraveling and become trapped in negative thinking patterns. If you feel weighed down by the pressures of societal expectations or experience difficulties in developing relationships, come and talk to me. Together, we will work on strategies that will allow you to address the root causes of your struggles and build skills that will help you overcome the barriers that stand in the way of you achieving your goals. Our time together will be focused on developing a healthy perception of the self, and strengthening your relationships with others to foster feelings of wholeness, peacefulness, and safety.

I grew up in a small suburb of Chicago and joined the Marine Corps shortly after graduating high school, which afforded me the ability to travel the world and meet people stemming from all walks of life. After leaving the service, I attended the University of Arizona where I received my Bachelors of Science in Psychology. I am currently working towards my master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling through Northern Arizona University and am practicing under the clinical supervision of Daniel Orozco, LPC.

For the past 3 years, I have worked diligently with the families and youth of the Pascua Yaqui tribe in Tucson, Arizona. While working in the mental health field, I have had the privilege of helping adolescents who have experienced PTSD, depression, anxiety, substance use, and sexual trauma. My passion lies in supporting people who are going through difficult times in their lives by promoting acceptance of the self, clarifying personal values, and encouraging commitment towards making positive changes that align with those values.

To begin a therapeutic journey together, please feel free to contact me at jkampa@affinitycounseling.orgor call (520) 257-1168 x711. I am available and Fridays and Sundays. I do not accept insurance and I charge $50 per session.

Deciding on a counselor to see can be an overwhelming process. It can be helpful to know a little bit about the counselor before deciding they are the one you want to see.

I am a Tucson native and I currently attend Northern Arizona University working toward receiving my master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. While I have been pursuing my master’s degree I have worked with children through adults with mental disabilities and families that needed support. For the last two years I worked closely with children who have been diagnosed with autism doing applied behavioral analysis therapy to help with their development. Currently, I have been working with adolescents that have emotional disabilities. My passion is within providing individuals with support during tough times in their life, as well as creating a safe and welcoming environment.

I look forward to meeting with you! I am available for both in person and virtual appointments Fridays and Sundays. I am practicing under the supervision of Daniel Orozco, LPC.
